Imagine a world without access restrictions, where you could freely obtain any article in any journal regardless of whether the library could afford to subscribe to it (and without breaking the law).
This is the vision of the open access movement - and in addition to the obvious benefits for readers, open access has the potential to raise the profile of academic research, which has traditionally only been visible to those fortunate enough to be members of well-resourced institutions.
A number of initiatives are underway to increase the availability of scholarly research, including SHURA - Sheffield Hallam University Research Archive
SHURA is Sheffield Hallam University’s open access research repository, designed to share our research with the world. Papers in SHURA can be discovered via search engines such as Google Scholar, making them easier to find - and as a result we’re already seeing our papers being downloaded by users worldwide. With the new RAE expected to increase the focus on citations and impact factors, this is an important way of disseminating your research to the widest possible readership.
For more information about SHURA, or to find out how you can add your own research papers, please see the staff intranet pages (SHU staff only) or the SHURA blog.

Electronic delivery of Inter-library loans (Document Supply)
In the past any paper journal articles that were not available from the SHU library were ordered for readers from the British Library and the copy retained by the reader.
This has now been superceded by a service called Secure Electronic Delivery (or SED).
• You will now receive a link to a pdf of the document requested instead of a photocopy.
• An email will inform you that the article is ready to download.
• You have 14 days to open and print the document which can be downloaded once.
• After 14 days, the link will be locked and cannot be accessed.
• If you open the document and close it without printing, you will not be able to gain further access! If this happens, please get in touch with the Library Document Supply Service who can arrange for another link to be sent out.
• The first time you use SED you will be asked to install the Digital Editions reader. This will take several minutes, but hang on!
• Legally, only one print copy is allowed. No further copies can be made from this and the text must not be cut and pasted or altered in any way.
• Readers with a visual impairment or dyslexia will need to request a special type of unencrypted pdf. Only this type of pdf will be compatible with the Assistive Technology software. Your local Document Supply Services team will be happy to arrange this.

Recent media additions
I thought it might be useful to provide details of some of the latest management DVDs that have recently been added to stock in Adsetts, in case you want to consider using any of them in next year's teaching. I have included links to publishers' descriptions (just click on the DVD title) and to the relevant library catalogue record (at the bottom of each description). If you have any suggestions for further DVDs that would be useful in your teaching please let me know.
Best Wishes

Reprints and Digitisation
We are now able to to digitise key texts under the terms of the CLA (Copyright Licencing Authority) Higher Education Trial Scanning Licence. These texts can then be made available to students via electronic reading lists.
We are therefore no longer able to accept printed reprints into the Key Text collections for material that can be digitised under this licence, that is:
readings which are module specific and can be made available via Talis Listmaterial from UK publishersmaterial within the limits of the Licence.Any requests for digitisation of key texts can be made to the Faculty Advisers here in the O&M team.

New GMID Interface
GMID (Global Market Information Database) has introduced a new interface. Those of you familiar with the current interface will know the frustrations of the present cumbersome tab-based/hierarchical lists approach. The new interface is much friendlier and allows browsing. Menu search is still available, though. This is how GMID explain the advantages of the new interface:Key enhancements to the new GMID interface are as follows:· Content is more visible via new INDUSTRIES, COUNTRIES, CONSUMERS pages. They offer quick access to latest reports, key trends (statistics) and topical comment.· Users no longer have to rely on Menu Search or Text Search to find research. They can find analysis by ‘browsing’ INDUSTRIES, COUNTRIES and CONSUMERS pages for content. This approach resembles the way users find information using internet browsers. · There is much more related content, giving users quick access to information they may not realise exists in the subscription.· Help functionality is much improved. It is more comprehensive than before and available online. The new interface is now live - access through LitSearch as usual. Any problems, or other questions, please feel free to contact the team.Dan Bye

Increased renewals for library items.
More Renewals at Learning Centre
The number of times that staff and students can renew books has been increased from 10 to 15. This is partly in response to the new arrangement for borrowing books over the summer period. Loanable items will be issued as normal during the summer period - week loan for one week, long loan for four weeks, part time loan for two weeks. This change in policy reflects the changing patterns of study, and the needs of our many students who are taught outside of the standard semesters.Any questions on these changes, please contact us.

Recording TV programmes
Did you know that we can record programmes from television for use in your lectures? All you need to do is let us know the title of the programme and when it is due to be broadcast (with as much advance notice as possible please) ... and we can do the rest. Programmes are recorded onto DVD and made available to borrow from the Learning Centre. You can search for upcoming programmes, and even set up alerts for future programmes of interest, by using the TRILT database (available through LitSearch). You can find out which programmes we've already recorded by using the Media Search option in our Library Catalogue.Programmes which have been recorded can also be shown over a period of days or weeks on our own LCTV channels here in the Learning Centre. This saves you having to take time to show them in class.More information about all of the above is available on the Staff Intranet or you can contact Geoff on ext 2122 or via e-mail at: g.p.russell@shu.ac.uk

E-Books
We are steadily increasing the collection of electronic books (ebooks) that are available for staff and students to view.Ebooks can be lcoated by using the Library Catalogue. The best way to search is to add "electronic book" to the Keywords search. For example, typing in Tourism "electronic book" produces these results.Ebooks can be accessed anywhere on campus, and you shouldn't have to enter a username or password. If you are using these resources at home, you should make sure that you get to the catalogue via the student portal.Any questions or comments, or suggestions for purchase, please contact one of the team.

LexisNexis Business and News
LexisNexis recently introduced a new search front page to their database. We had a look, and found it much more useful and intuitive. Now, it is a simple matter to restrict searches to, for example, Broadsheet newspapers in the UK.Or, to refine searches even further, you can just select an individual publication such as the Financial Times. Much more useful, and we have already seen students using it well. If you want to know anymore about it, drop us a line.To access LexisNexis Business and News, just go via LITSearch, and select Newspapers from the General Reference list.

Research Methods drop in session
We ran a series of drop in sessions this week for students studying International Business at postgraduate level. As we all know, our external examiners often refer to the lack of electronic resources used by the students, so these are excellent opportunities to introduce students at all levels to the wonders of LITSearch...

Student Visit
We had a visit on Tuesday from some students at Sheffield College who are studying on the Tourism and Event Management foundation course. We showed them some of the resources that they can access, gave them a tour of the library and warned them away from wikipedia as an academic resource. All in a day's work really :)The lecture seemed well received by the students, and we uploaded a copy to www.slideshare.net/mborg so that they could look at it later on.We also created a delicious page for them at http://del.icio.us/shulibrary with some links.
